Best eSIM for Spain in 2026 (Prices, Networks and Local SIMs)

The best travel eSIMs for Spain compared on price per GB and network, plus when a local Spanish SIM is cheaper and what ID you need to buy one.

For most visitors to Spain, the best value is a Spain-only plan from Airalo or Ubigi. Airalo’s 20 GB plan costs $20 for 30 days on the Orange network, and Ubigi’s 25 GB plan costs $19. For a short trip with light use, Saily and Nomad have 1–3 GB plans from about $4. If you are staying for months, a local prepaid SIM is much cheaper, but you need your passport to buy one.

We compared Spain-only plans from five providers using the prices on their official sites, checked on 18 October 2026. Prices are in US dollars, as the providers show them.

Spain-only plans are much cheaper than Europe-wide plans. Airalo’s 10 GB Spain plan costs $14 for 30 days, against $31 for its 10 GB Europe plan. If your trip is Spain only, don’t pay for coverage you won’t use.

Airalo: best overall value

Airalo’s Spain plans run on Orange with 5G and cover mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands. Prices start at $4 for 1 GB and reach $39 for 50 GB, with the 20 GB / 30-day plan at $20 the sweet spot for a one- to three-week holiday. Unlimited plans slow to 1 Mbps after 5 GB a day. Plans can be topped up.

Nomad: two networks

Nomad’s Spain plans can use both Movistar and Orange, which helps in areas where one network is weak. Prices are close to Airalo’s: $9 for 5 GB or $14 for 10 GB for 30 days.

Holafly: unlimited, including the Canary Islands

Holafly only sells unlimited plans. It is not the cheapest, from $24.50 for 7 days, but its Spain plan covers the Canary Islands as well as the mainland and Balearics, and it can connect to all four major Spanish networks. Hotspot sharing is limited.

eSIM vs a local Spanish SIM

Spanish prepaid tariffs are very generous. A local SIM makes sense if you are staying for a month or more.

Option Price Data What you need
DIGI prepaid €5 per month 25 GB Passport, shop visit
DIGI prepaid €10 per month 100 GB Passport, shop visit
Airalo Spain eSIM $20 20 GB, 30 days Nothing, buy online

DIGI uses the Movistar network and lets unused data roll over, according to its official site. The big three operators, Movistar, Orange and Vodafone, sell prepaid tariffs from around €10 for 60–70 GB.

The catch is registration. Spanish law (Ley 25/2007) requires operators to register every prepaid SIM buyer with an identity document. As a tourist you must show your passport in a shop, and activation can take time. A travel eSIM avoids all of this, and you can install it before you leave home.

Spain-only or Europe-wide?

  • Spain only: buy a Spain plan. It costs roughly half as much per GB.
  • Spain plus Portugal, France or Italy: a Europe plan is simpler. See the best eSIM for Europe.
  • Spain plus Morocco or Gibraltar: check coverage carefully. Morocco is not in EU roaming zones and is not included in most Europe plans.

Frequently asked questions

Which network is best in Spain for an eSIM?

Movistar, Orange and Vodafone all have good 4G and 5G coverage in Spanish cities. Airalo's Spain plan uses Orange, Nomad uses Movistar and Orange, and Holafly can connect to Orange, Movistar, Vodafone and Yoigo. In rural areas, an eSIM that can switch between networks is an advantage.

Do Spain eSIMs work in the Canary and Balearic Islands?

Airalo's Spain plan covers mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands. Holafly's Spain plan covers the mainland, the Balearics and the Canary Islands. Check the coverage details before you buy if you are visiting the Canaries.

Is a local SIM cheaper than an eSIM in Spain?

For long stays, yes. Spanish prepaid tariffs give far more data for the money, for example DIGI offers 25 GB for €5 a month. But you need your passport to register the SIM and must visit a shop. For a short holiday, a travel eSIM is usually more convenient.

Do I need a passport to buy a SIM card in Spain?

Yes. Spanish law requires operators to register every prepaid SIM buyer with an identity document, so tourists need their passport. Travel eSIMs bought online from foreign providers do not require this registration.

Should I buy a Spain-only or a Europe eSIM?

If you are only visiting Spain, a Spain-only plan is cheaper. If you are also visiting Portugal, France or another country, a Europe plan saves you buying a second eSIM.
